I started reading the book of Hebrews this week.
You don’t have to go far to meet Jesus here. Chapter 1 takes us right to Christ in all His glory. What a tribute to the Son of God in the first 14 verses!
First, the author tells us that God the Father “has spoken to us by his Son,” just like He spoke to “our fathers by the prophets” (as recorded in the Old Testament) (v. 1-2).
Then he launches into a mind-boggling description that answers the question, “Who is this Son?”
The Son is the heir of all things.
The Father created the world through the Son.
The Son is the radiance of the glory of God.
The Son is the exact imprint of God’s nature.
The Son upholds the universe by His powerful word.
The Son made purification for sins.
The Son sat down at the right hand of God.
The Son is superior to and more excellent than all the angels.
What a picture we have of Jesus. What a Son, what a sin-purifying Savior, what a God!
Make no mistake about it, the Son of God is God the Son. Hebrews 1 attributes deity to the Son. He is co-equal to and co-eternal with the Father. Together they have always existed; together they created the universe from nothing, and together they sustain it by their all-powerful word.
This Son is to be worshipped as God because He is God – God the Father says so by addressing His Son as God. Note Hebrews 1:8 (a quotation of Psalm 45:6):
8 But of the Son he says,
“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever,
the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.”
Perhaps you have heard someone say, “The Bible never says that Jesus is God.” Here’s how to respond – open up your Bible and show him the following verses: John 1:1, John 1:18, John 20:28, Romans 9:5, Titus 2:13, 2 Peter 1:1, 1 John 5:20.
Then ask him (or her) – what do you think these verses are saying about Jesus?

Then ask him, “Does it matter whether we believe that Jesus is God?”
Answer: Absolutely. Our eternal destiny depends on it. Consider these verses:
4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
1 John 5:4-5
Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.
1 John 4:15
May God the Father open the eyes of many to believe in Jesus as God the Son.
